Scroll through your Instagram feed at any given time and I’m confident you’ll quickly come across a smoothie bowl. The smoothie bowl is having its moment of fame, as evidenced by the brightly colored concoctions taking over our feeds, and frankly this is one trend I hope sticks around.
Beyond their Instagram worthy appeal however, smoothie bowls are easy to fall in love with because they’re refreshing, easy to make, and make for a tasty meal.
How to Make a Smoothie Bowl:
It’s not quite as simple as forgoing the glass and serving up your regular smoothie in a bowl. A good smoothie bowl has a thicker, slushy-like quality to it that reminds me of sorbet or frozen yogurt along with an assortment of toppings. I find the thicker consistency and added toppings also makes smoothie bowls generally more satisfying because there’s more chewing involved.
Now to get that extra-thick consistency you need to do two things:
- use slightly less liquid and
- use lots of frozen fruit.
In this particular smoothie I’ve replaced some of the liquid with coconut yogurt and used both frozen strawberries and raspberries.
I also brewed some rooibos tea and threw that in along with some goji berries for extra flavor. If you’ve never had rooibos tea before, it’s not a tea at all, but an herbal infusion that hails from South Africa with a unique fruity/floral flavor that pairs really nicely with berries. It’s also caffeine-free which means you can have it any time of day.
Hemp seeds provide some protein and along with the yogurt make this bowl super-filling. The quantities I’ve listed make either one big bowl or two small ones if you’re having it for a snack (or even dessert) instead of a meal. I topped mine with extra fresh berries and hemp seeds, but feel free to use whatever toppings sound good to you (coconut flakes, chia seeds etc…).

Mixed Berry Smoothie Bowl
This triple red berry smoothie bowl made with strawberries, raspberries and goji berries is, bright, refreshing and packed with anti-oxidants.
Ingredients
- 1 cup/240ml filtered water
- 2 Rooibos tea bags
- 2 Tablespoons/14g goji berries
- 6 ounces/170g coconut milk yogurt
- 1 cup/140g frozen strawberries
- ½ cup/70g frozen raspberries
- 3 Tablespoons/30g hemp seeds (plus more to top) or use your favorite unflavored protein powder
- Fresh strawberries to top
- Fresh raspberries to top
Instructions
- Start the night before. Bring water to a simmer, remove from heat, and add tea bags. Let steep, covered, for 10 minutes, discard tea bags, pour into heat-proof container. Add goji berries and refrigerate tea overnight.
- Place tea, goji berries, coconut milk yogurt, frozen fruit and hemp seeds in a high speed blender and blend until smooth, scraping down the sides as necessary.
- Pour into bowls and top with fresh berries and additional hemp seeds if desired. Serve immediately.
