Skip the store-bought teas and create your own flavorful ginger cinnamon lemon tea at home. Easy to make with fresh ingredients, it’s the perfect warm and comforting drink for chilly days or when you’re feeling a bit under the weather.
Your typical cup of ginger lemon tea probably starts by dropping a sachet into a cup of hot water, but there’s a better way to make it. Store-bought teas rely on a combination of dried ginger and lemon flavor, which while obviously convenient, will never taste as complex or bright as tea made with fresh ginger and lemon (that’s why most store-bought options are often disappointingly bland or just bitter). Luckily it’s easy to make your own at home.
This ginger cinnamon lemon tea is one of my favorite herbal teas to make at home. (For more ginger tea variations check out my how to make fresh ginger tea post.) It’s bright and spicy while still supremely soothing. It’s a wonderfully warming drink to cozy up with when it’s cold outside or to sip on when you’re feeling a bit under the weather. Best of all you only need a handful of ingredients to make it, so grab a saucepan and let’s make some ginger cinnamon lemon tea!
Ginger Cinnamon Lemon Tea
There’s no need to buy pre-packaged tea when you can make an even more flavorful version at home in just minutes. You can enjoy it either hot or cold and can brew a large batch to re-heat as needed. Fresh ginger provides a nice, soothing, spicy heat, while cinnamon brings a bit of woodsy warmth and fresh lemon a bit of brightness. Here’s what you’ll need:
Ingredient Notes:
(Here are a few notes about the ingredients you’ll need for this recipe. As always find the full list of ingredients and directions in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.)
- Ginger – Fresh ginger is the key to this ginger cinnamon tea, but for the best flavor you’ll also want to peel and grate it. Simply slicing ginger into hot water won’t give you the flavor you’re after, finely grating the ginger allows for the maximum flavor to be extracted so grab a microplane or a fine grater.
- Cinnamon – For a smooth spicy flavor choose Ceylon cinnamon sticks. Ceylon cinnamon has a less aggressive flavor than the more common Cassia cinnamon and makes for a better tea. Choose sticks instead of powder to avoid any unwelcome grit in your tea.
- Lemon – While adding rounds of lemon into your saucepan might certainly look pretty, save those for garnishing your cup. Boiling the white pith will give the tea a bitter, unpleasant flavor so we’re using just the flavorful peel to brew and adding in the lemon slices and lemon juice afterwards.
- Sweetener – Use the sweetener of your choice such as honey or a few drops of stevia to sweeten the tea.
