Ingredients for Frozen Chocolate Dipped Strawberries
(Full ingredient list and directions can be found in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.)
You don’t need much to make these. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Fresh strawberries – Choose firm, bright berries with the stems intact.
- Chocolate – Dark or milk chocolate both work, but I love using dark chocolate for its richness and balance with the natural sweetness of strawberries.
- Coconut oil or vegetable shortening – Helps the chocolate melt smoothly and gives the coating the right texture.
- Optional toppings – Crushed nuts, shredded coconut, sprinkles, or mini chocolate chips all work well.
👉 Pro Tip: Use good-quality chocolate — it makes a big difference in the taste and texture.

How to Make Frozen Chocolate Covered Strawberries (Step-by-Step)
These are as fun to make as they are to eat. Here’s how to do it:
- Wash and dry strawberries: Rinse gently, then dry thoroughly with paper towels — moisture can cause the chocolate to seize. Slice the strawberries if half (keeping the stems) since whole frozen strawberries are too hard to bite into.
- Prepare a tray: Line a baking sheet with parchment or wax paper.
- Melt the chocolate and oil:
Use a double boiler by placing a heatproof bowl over a pot of simmering water (make sure the bottom doesn’t touch the water). Stir chocolate gently until fully melted.
Or microwave the chocolate in 20–30 second intervals, stirring in between until smooth. - Dip the strawberries: Hold each berry half by the stem and dip into the melted chocolate. Let excess drip off before placing on the tray.
- Add toppings (optional): Sprinkle on your desired toppings before the chocolate sets.
- Freeze: Place the tray in the freezer for 1–2 hours, or until the chocolate is firm and the strawberries are frozen.
- Serve or store: Eat immediately or transfer to an airtight container for freezer storage.
Tips for the Best Frozen Chocolate Covered Strawberries
Want great results every time? Keep these tips in mind:
- Dry your strawberries thoroughly – Even a small amount of water can ruin melted chocolate.
- Work quickly – Melted chocolate will start to thicken as it cools.
- Use a level surface in the freezer – Keeps the chocolate coating even as it sets.
👉 Bonus Tip: Let the strawberries sit at room temperature for at least 5 minutes before eating to slightly soften for the perfect texture.

Frozen Chocolate Dipped Strawberries
Whether you’re craving a sweet, healthy snack or whipping up an easy treat for the kids, frozen chocolate covered strawberries are always a good idea.
Ingredients
- 1lb/454g fresh strawberries, washed, pat dry and sliced in half (The strawberries need to be completely dry before dipping, so pat them dry after washing then spread them out cut side down on a paper towel after slicing in half.)
- 12 ounces/340g dark chocolate chips or finely chopped chocolate
- 1 teaspoon/5ml coconut oil
- Toppings: crushed almonds, shredded coconut or chocolate sprinkles (my favorite is linked below)
Instructions
- Line a sheet pan with parchment paper, set aside.
- In a medium saucepan bring a few inches of water to a simmer. Place the chocolate and coconut oil into a heatproof bowl and set it over the pan of simmering water. Melt, stirring occasionally, until smooth. Remove the bowl from heat.
- Working one strawberry at a time, pick up the strawberry by the top leaves (or use a toothpick to hold the strawberry) and dip it three quarters into the chocolate until coated on all sides. Shake gently or use a fork to remove any excess before laying the strawberry cut side down on the parchment lined sheet pan. Sprinkle with desired toppings.
- Repeat with the remaining strawberries.
- Place sheet pan in the freezer for a least an hour to set. Transfer set strawberries to an airtight container and store in the freezer.
- Remove strawberries from freezer at least 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
Variations:
- Use your favorite toppings instead.
- For longer storage coat the strawberries completely in chocolate.
- For regular chocolate dipped strawberries store in the fridge and consume same day.
Storage:
Store in an airtight container in the freezer.
