With the change in season comes an abundance of tasty fall fruit, which means of course apples and pears are everywhere at the moment. Which also means it’s the perfect time to make one of my favorite fall treats – apple pear sauce.
Apples and pears are staples at my house during this time of year and making apple pear sauce is one the easiest and tastiest ways to put them to good use. If you love the flavor of homemade applesauce then you’ll love this apple pear version.
Apple Pear Sauce
The combination of both apples and pears creates a sauce that’s a bit different from the usual applesauce but with all the familiar cozy fall flavors. It’s simple to make and customizable. Mix up the flavorings, make it chunky or smooth, or combine different varieties of apples and pears to easily adapt the recipe to your preferences. Here’s what you’ll need:
Ingredient Notes:
(Here are a few notes about the ingredients you’ll need for this recipe. As always find the full list of ingredients and directions in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.)
- Apples – The best apples to use for applesauce are a combination of sweet and tart apples that cook down easily. I like a combination of Galas along with Honeycrisps but you can use your favorite combination of apples.
- Pears – You can also use a variety of different pears as long as they are ripe. I often use Bartlett’s but Bosc pears work as well.
- Lemon Juice – Fresh lemon juice really balances the sweetness of the sauce so don’t skip it!
- Spices – You can use any number of spices but cinnamon and nutmeg are a classic combination and what I’ve called for here. You can also make a plain sauce to use in recipes by omitting the flavorings altogether.
- Maple Syrup (optional) – A drizzle of maple syrup at the end really brings together all those fall flavors but if you find your apples and pears are quite sweet you may not need to add any at all. Taste your sauce and adjust the amount of sweetener you add to your liking.
How to Make Apple Pear Sauce:
Nothing beats the taste of homemade apple pear sauce and you can have a batch ready in under 30 minutes!
- Start by coring and cutting your apples and pears into small chunks, (the smaller the pieces the faster they’ll cook down).
- Throw the fruit into a pot along with the lemon juice, spices and water. (For extra apple flavor throw in a few of the apple peels and fish them out before mashing.) Bring the mixture to a simmer, lower the heat, cover and cook stirring occasionally until the fruit is tender and falling apart.
- If you like your sauce chunky, use a potato masher to mash the fruit. If you prefer a smoother sauce pass the sauce through a food mill or pulse in a food processor until smooth.
- Store the sauce in an airtight container in the fridge and enjoy throughout the week!
How to Serve:
- Use apple pear sauce anywhere you’d use apple sauce.
- Serve it as a snack.
- Use it as a topping for pancakes or waffles.
- Swirl it into yogurt.
- Add it to oatmeal.
- Spoon it over ice cream.
- Use it as an all-natural sweetener.
- The possibilities are endless!
Variations:
- Use a combination of different apples and pears.
- Use vanilla and/or ginger instead or cinnamon and nutmeg.
- Use maple sugar or coconut sugar instead of maple syrup.
- Skip mashing or blending and serve as a compote.
