The next time you grab a cup of coffee or a bottle of water before you head out, consider what those drinks are in. Whatever that cup or container is made of can end up in your body or in already overfull landfills.
Plastic bottles are a cause for concern when it comes to both our health and our environment and it makes sense to avoid using them whenever possible. Chemicals in plastic bottles can leach out over time with heat and reuse, which you then ingest.
By carrying a non-toxic reusable water bottle or using a thermal cup for your coffee when you’re out you’re keeping toxins out of your body and the environment.
Luckily there are a number of great alternatives to paper cups and plastic bottles that make that easy; glass and stainless steel are two great options that are both safe and re-usable.
With glass bottles there’s no risk of chemicals leaching or funny aftertaste. Glass is non-toxic, safe and affordable and can hold both hot and cold drinks. A benefit to using glass is that see-thru bottles allow you to see how much you have left in your cup or bottle and they are easy to clean; the downside is that glass can be more fragile and heavier than stainless steel.
I like to use mine to carry water, iced tea, juices and smoothies; I’ll even use them to store beverages in the fridge so they’re ready to go when I am.
The main benefit of stainless steel is that it’s durable and lightweight. If you get a thermal bottle with a dual layer you also get the benefit of an added layer of insulation which keeps your drinks either hot or cool for a much longer period of time and they stay cooler to the touch when filled with hot liquids.
I like to use these for hot drinks like coffee, tea, or broth and to keep drinks cool on a very hot day if I’m going to be out for a long time.
