In the food community great books, great bloggers, and great recipes meet regularly. It never ceases to amaze me the number of talented people that I’ve come across, as I discover new blogs and new cookbook authors. One such person I’ve come to know in the food blogging community is Leemei Tan. An acclaimed food blogger, she can now add “book author” to her list of accomplishments as she has recently come out with her cookbook, Lemongrass and Ginger.
Leemei Tan is the freelance recipe writer, food stylist and photographer behind My Cooking Hut which she’s authored since 2007. Some of you may remember me talking about Leemei previously when she graciously asked me to contribute one of my recipes to her blog.
Lemongrass and Ginger is her first cookbook and it’s a stunning compilation of recipes from across Asia. Robust in aromatic spices and seasonings, the tastes of Japan, Korea, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and more are assembled in this comprehensive book.
With over 100 recipes and 7 chapters Leemei takes us on a culinary tour of her own food journey. The recipes are her personal re-interpretation of many classic Asian recipes and will inspire to you try your hand at what some may think is an intimidating cuisine. Leemei guides us through, however, with clear and thorough directions.
At the back of the book you’ll find three helpful sections that include “Basic Recipes,” “Basic Techniques” and a Glossary of common ingredients. Each of the basic recipes makes the exact quantity needed for the main recipes in the book and are easy to assemble once you have the necessary ingredients. The basic technique section is invaluable for learning how to properly cook soba noodles or de-bone a chicken leg, for example, and the glossary is helpful when sourcing ingredients.
As you flip through this book you’ll be wowed not only by the fantastic recipes but the outstanding photography that accompanies it. The photos are breathtaking and really showcase the recipes to their finest, each page inviting you to get in the kitchen.
